Why not make ALL drugs available without prescription?

Why not put them in the water like fluoride? We could “end the HIV epidemic” in no time!

Rebecca, possible correction to this. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that California adopted legislation already in 2019 that allowed PrEP to be dispensed by pharmacists without a prescription, but only for 30 days. Some legislators apparently saw that as a grave injustice (folks might go off their meds after 30 days while trying to see a doctor--oh horrors!), so the bill that was just now signed into law apparently allows pharmacists to dispense PrEP for 90 days "and beyond that on an ongoing basis as long as certain tests and follow-up are provided." This should be a paywall-free link:

Thank you! I wondered about testing because you are supposed to be HIV negative while on PrEP (although they give you the same drugs if you seroconvert, so….?). I’ll look into this and see if a correction is warranted, but it won’t be until tonight or tomorrow. Thanks again.

Sorry I'm kind of randomly dropping this here, have you followed Ozempic much? 60 Minutes Australia just did this piece about it. Interested parallels between it and PrEP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9UVBEZN69k

I had to look it up, from the CDC: PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) can reduce your chance of getting HIV from sex or injection drug use. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV.

Viruses do not exist.

I’m almost done with an in depth analysis of the paper most frequently cited to support this high effectiveness. Spoiler alert: the actual study does not support nearly the efficacy we are told in the media. Other studies tell a similar story.

How many people getting PrEP direct from a pharmacy are going to get their liver and kidneys checked on a regular basis? Probably most won't, much less be told they have the potential to seriously harm themselves.

EXACTLY. I’m not at all a regulations enforcer type person but this seems needlessly reckless.

I don't know what PrEP is, and I think the idea, as expressed, that people can buy whatever they want is fine, but the issue is 'full disclosure' by the makers and dealers is rather important;

1. Have the makers and dealers presented ALL the information regarding all the ingredients, all their testing, all the vested interests and all the other information regarding its safety, long term effects, environmental damage, and so on?

2. Have the people given approval to the makers and dealers for sale of this, and other, formulations?

3. Are the makers and dealers currently, or at any time in the past, a subject of any civil or criminal action in regards to any of their products?

etc.

PrEP is the prescription of anti “HIV” medications to HIV NEGATIVE individuals as a kind of prophylactic. It’s taking toxic chemotherapy for a condition one doesn’t even have (if said condition even exists, which I do not think it does). And hey, I’m a libertarian and I think people should be able to get whatever drugs they want without a prescription, but I also think the manufacturers must morally be transparent about the possible negative effects. I’m pro-information.

But won't such liberal behavior of pill-popping for every new guy in town lead to the appearance of drug-resistant mutants of 'the virus'?

Where are the experts??!!

There are no experts, they just play them on TV (or the internet).

Wow, this is very discouraging. The problem with making these or other drugs available without prescription is that it removes all obstacles to people being brainwashed by the ubiquitous ads and going straight to the store and stocking up on these toxic meds. With a prescription, at least they have to go to the trouble of making a doctor's appointment first, which can be a hassle, so that likely deters at least some people from taking this stuff. And targeting people of color for these harmful products is beyond despicable.

"California has once again proven to be at the cutting edge of public health." That false assertion is not the best way to start your post IMO. Maybe you're being sarcastic or you believe that your readers understand that "public health" by definition is oppressive?
