California has once again proven to be at the cutting edge of public health (SARCASM ALERT), as Governor Newsom recently signed a bill that would allow citizens to obtain PrEP medication without a doctor’s prescription.
Newsom signs bill making HIV prevention meds available without prescription
I have to admit I’m torn on this—on the one hand, the entire concept of PrEP is not only ridiculous but dangerous; on the other hand, as a libertarian, I think people should be able to buy whatever drugs they want, even if they’re bad for them, so long as they are made aware of all the effects. Somehow I don’t think that Rep. Weiner, who introduced the bill just signed by Newsom, made this decision to align with his libertarian standards.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill Tuesday that makes medication preventing HIV available to residents without a prescription.
The bill, S.B. 339, authorizes pharmacists to furnish preexposure prophylaxis, commonly called PrEP, a drug that helps prevent HIV infection prior to exposure, as well as postexposure prophylaxis, a drug used for patients exposed to HIV, if specified conditions are met.
The article does not indicated what “specified conditions” need to be met, but perhaps this next paragraph provides a clue.
The bill was introduced by state Sen. Scott Wiener (D) and will allow pharmacists to distribute the drugs without a prescription. Wiener said in a statement that while there have been “massive strides in HIV treatment,” the state still sees about 4,000 new infections each year, particularly in communities of color.
Yes, there it is. “The state still sees about 4,000 new infections each year, particularly in communities of color.” This bill is almost certainly entirely aimed at increasing PrEP coverage in that community, as we have seen time and time again. I have to admit that it is somewhat comical to watch AIDS establishment continue their hand wringing over the likelihood that the Black community has enough sense of history to continue rejecting these toxic drugs, but in the end, it isn’t funny at all that so many people have fallen for this garbage already and there is no end in sight.

Unreal!
Why not make ALL drugs available without prescription?
