I have a few big projects in the works, so I have been less present here. That will soon change. For now, I present to you this almost too ridiculous to be real piece from The Body:
What I Learned From Editing Wikipedia With an HIV-Centric Lens
Yes, that headline is real. It isn’t a joke. From the piece:
Editing Wikipedia may not be the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of AIDS activism or even AIDS cultural work. But in the time since we completed our work, the two pages have been viewed over 2,000 times, which means that our edits have helped shape people’s knowledge about Vaid and Strike a Pose.
I can certainly imagine how editing Wikipedia could qualify as “AIDS activism” in a strange sort of way—the opportunity to whitewash reality is very seductive.
What do you think of this piece?
Going onto thebody.com makes me feel slimy. It's like walking into alice and wonderland territory where everything is designed to keep you 'retained in care'. Just yuck.
If these people really want to "put well-sourced, well-researched information about AIDS into the world," and "to tear down the walls between information about HIV and people who need it," then their Wikipedia edits should include Miss Rebecca's work.
