The following video provides an excellent summary of the Truvada lawsuits, presented with very minimal commentary. It’s good to see that this case is getting a wider audience, although this reporter is clearly in alignment with the HIV AIDS story.
Note that at the 3:00 mark he points out that TAF (“good Truvada”) is not without its risks, and that the trials that led to its approval were “small.” He points out that TAF is more likely to cause cardiovascular events and weight gain than is TDF (“bad Truvada”). There is also some discussion of the legal issues regarding the ability to prove that Gilead knew what they were doing. It’s actually a little creepy, because the entire thing seems to be about freedom around producing more! new! innovative! drugs, which will certainly come at an ever higher cost. “The last thing we want is for drug companies to stifle innovation.”
At 8:20 he points out the combined burden of the stigma of testing HIV-positive and the dangerous side effects of the drugs, which sometimes need to be medicated by yet more drugs. It’s good to see someone pointing this out.
Finally, why am I not surprised that Gilead has fourteen candidates for “anti-HIV drugs” in the pipeline?
